Protecting Purity with YL’s Seed to Seal Promise

-- by Sara Cox Landolt!

Before my trip to Utah last month, I had these peaceful, almost vineyard-like visions of myself rolling around among the Young Living Lavender fields. At the minimum, I should at least get some quality face time with actual living Lavender plants, right?
I shared my Lavender dream with one of my swim friends pre-trip. “I’m going to take a selfie rolling around in the Lavender fields! I am SO excited!!” He didn’t quite catch my excitement but did wonder if any joyful selfies playing among the crops would destroy the crop’s purity? Hmmmm… hadn’t thought of that, what would be allowed at the farm? Would there be Lavender police??

FARM DAY

My friend Genny and I toured the distillery and bottling area first and then took time to plant baby Lavenders! Our Lavender plants will take three years to mature! The fields with rows of mature Lavender were in an area farther off… oh no!
Me standing next to the massive pile of Juniper!
>>>But first, what about that selfie? Did I get tossed from the farm?<<<
I took a lot of photos! I did hunker down in a gorgeous field of Goldenrod! And there was an experimental section on the farm where you could walk among the rows. There was a real security guard at the end of the area and he actually encouraged visitors to do just that, pick, smell, taste (edible ones)! What?!
While standing in line for the distillery tour, a farm employee chatted among us. The farm was distilling Juniper today (there was a massive pile right next to our line. The smell – omg! Fabulous!) She said we were totally welcome to take photos with the Juniper, pick it up and hold it etc.
Two things not allowed:
1 – No burrowing into the massive pile of Juniper…
2 – No climbing the pile or standing on the top of the Juniper pile.
*I guess both of these things had already been attempted…who would argue with a gentle roll in the Lavender then?!
Throughout the farm tour and then later on during 2017 Young Living Grand Convention, I learned first-hand what Young Living’s Seed to Seed quality commitment was all about. http://seedtoseal.com/
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Young Living’s promise of purity matters. It’s important to me to know our Lavender essential oil is actually just Lavender. It’s made from a real crop that is grown in the ground, harvested at the peak time for quality and is distilled and bottled via a state of the art production process.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I learned more about Seed to Seal during a general session at Grand Convention and at a break-out session “Protecting Our Seed to Seal Standard” with Lauren Walker, EVP/Global Operations.
My biggest wow moments? There were a few:
1 – EVERY LEVEL: Young Living members talk a lot about Young Living having its own farms, and that being really cool. It is cool. And unique.
For me though, the excitement and pride in the company I’ve chosen, comes back to the Seed to Seal guarantee. Because ALL Young Living suppliers practice Seed to Seal. Corporate farms, partner farms and certified suppliers, all declare to seed, cultivate and distill according to YL’s Seed to Seal specifications. http://seedtoseal.com/en/seed-to-seal-partnership-principles
We won’t take undocumented, inferior product.
2- TESTING PROCESS: During one of the general sessions at convention we learned more about the science and tests performed on our oils.
The tests evaluate things such as:
- The thickness of an oil and the way it flows, this tells a lot about the purity of the oil. Every oil has its own density and another test can tell if water is left over in the oil. Other tests look at how beams of light travel through the oil and how much light is bent.
The ICP-MS measures the amount of metal inside oils. The testing instrument is so massive and sensitive that it has a part per billion sensitivities. An example: That would be like finding one drop of water in an Olympic size swimming pool.

Planting my baby Lavender!
Young Living runs 15-20 tests, three times, when it receives a supplier’s oil and repeats these same tests again when the oil is finished. Oils that don’t make the grade – they are tossed. Yes, even high-demand oils that members are patiently waiting for.
God doesn’t make junk and Young Living won’t either.
3- VISITS & AUDITS: Young Living visits its suppliers. In the last six months, Young Living visited and performed audits in 12 countries.
People are amazed when we show up, Walker shared. We want to understand as much as possible about the process and see how the supplier runs their business, Walker described. We look at inventory, business records, documentation, data, permits, licenses, and the running of the business.
What we saw is people, and they all expressed gratitude for coming so far to see them. They said they felt important and valued and that they’ve never had anyone who buys their oils come to see them before!
Other suppliers aren't willing to meet our standards, it is too much work and hassle. Recently 800 kilos of a precious oil were on the market, Walker said. We asked for specific documentation and forms and the supplier had no clue what we needed or why we would ask for it. Instead, that supplier sold the oil to another company with different standards, someone easier to work with, and walked away.
Such a happy day!!!!
Young Living is a company that cares enough to ask. This is what we do. We do it well. Our oils are the best for a reason and I’m in  with YL’s Seed to Seal Promise! Thank you, Young Living!

RUN THROUGH THE LAVENDER
It turns out I missed Young Living’s Run Through the Lavender 5K event by a few weeks! Guests are invited to celebrate the annual lavender harvest & enjoy a fun mix of other family friendly events. What a fun unique (no one else does this) industry event!
